Bonobot is what happens when you take everything that makes OpenClaw powerful and rebuild it on top of an enterprise control plane with governance as a first-class concern. It's not a watered-down version. It's not OpenClaw with some guardrails bolted on. It's a fundamentally different architecture designed for a fundamentally different trust model.

Here's what the setup looks like on Bonito's control plane.
First, you create a department scope for Ad Operations within Bonito. This scope defines the boundaries: which cloud providers the department can use, which models they have access to, and what their monthly budget ceiling is. Maybe they get access to AWS Bedrock and GCP Vertex AI (but not Azure, because that's allocated to the engineering org), with a budget cap of $2,000 per month.
Next, you configure the agent's Resource Connectors. This is where Bonobot diverges most sharply from the OpenClaw model. Instead of giving the agent raw file system access or generic API credentials, Resource Connectors provide structured, scoped, and audited access to specific enterprise data sources. The ad tech agent gets a connector to a specific S3 bucket containing campaign data exports, read-only. It gets another connector to a specific Google Sheets workbook where the team tracks performance metrics. Each connector specifies exactly what the agent can read, what it can write, and what it cannot touch.
Then you configure the agent's model routing. Through Bonito's gateway, the ad tech agent's queries route through a cost-optimized policy. Simple data lookups and formatting tasks go to lightweight models like Amazon Nova Lite at near-zero cost. Complex analytical queries that require reasoning about campaign strategy route to more capable models like Gemini 2.5 Pro. The routing happens automatically based on task complexity, and total spend counts against the department's budget cap.
Finally, you define the agent's tool permissions. Bonobot supports a growing library of enterprise tools, but every tool requires explicit enablement. The ad tech agent might get permission to generate charts, create document drafts, and send Slack notifications to a specific channel. It does not get permission to execute arbitrary code, make outbound HTTP requests to unknown endpoints, or access tools outside its granted set.
Security That Doesn't Compromise Power
The security model goes deeper than permissions. Bonobot implements SSRF protection at the network layer, ensuring agents cannot be prompt-injected into making requests to internal services or external endpoints that aren't explicitly allowlisted. There's no code execution environment, period. Agents can use tools and access data through connectors, but they cannot run arbitrary scripts, which eliminates an entire class of attack vectors that plague less constrained agent architectures.
Every action the agent takes generates an audit log entry. Not just the final output, but the full chain: what data it accessed, which model it queried, what tools it invoked, how many tokens it consumed, and what the cost was. These audit logs integrate with Bonito's compliance framework, which already supports SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, and ISO 27001 scanning. When your compliance team needs to demonstrate that AI systems are operating within policy, they don't have to reconstruct what happened from scattered logs across multiple systems. It's all in one place.
Budget enforcement is real-time, not after-the-fact. When the ad tech department's agent approaches its monthly spending limit, it can be configured to alert administrators, throttle to cheaper models only, or pause entirely. There's no "we'll catch it in the next billing cycle" situation. The control plane knows exactly how much has been spent because every request flows through the gateway with cost tracking built in.
Resource Connectors vs. Raw Access
This distinction deserves emphasis because it's the key architectural difference between personal AI agents and enterprise-grade ones. OpenClaw's power comes partly from raw access: it can read any file on your machine, run any command in your terminal, browse any website. That's incredibly flexible and perfectly appropriate when you're the only user and you trust the agent with your own data.
Resource Connectors flip this model. Instead of "access everything, restrict later," connectors implement "access nothing, grant specifically." Each connector is a typed, scoped interface to a specific data source. An S3 connector specifies the bucket, the prefix path, and the permission level. A Google Sheets connector specifies the spreadsheet ID and whether the agent can read, write, or both. A database connector might expose specific views or queries without granting access to the underlying tables.
This means the agent's data access is not only controlled but comprehensible. An administrator can look at an agent's configuration and immediately understand exactly what data it can touch. That's auditable. That's explainable. And critically, that's what regulators and compliance frameworks actually require: the ability to demonstrate, at any point, exactly what an AI system has access to and what it has done with that access.
